Description
Sarah Acker is an associate in the Office of the General Counsel of Dentons Canada. She is part of an in-house team of legal advisors to the Firm who provide legal advice to lawyers, management – including the Board of Directors, and members of the Firm’s business services. Sarah advises on various issues, including commercial agreements, professional ethics and legal obligations, confidentiality and privacy, and compliance with regional and global policies and procedures. Sarah is also involved in legal training and education at the Firm. Prior to joining the Office of the General Counsel as an associate, Sarah worked as a conflicts lawyer at the Firm where she specialized in identifying and resolving potential conflicts of interest and related compliance issues domestically and internationally.
Sarah has worked as an adjudicator for the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada’s Refugee Protection Division, where she prepared, presided over, and decided refugee claims. She articled with the Ministry of the Attorney General, Crown Law Office-Criminal division, where she worked on criminal appellate matters and prosecuted provincial offences.
Sarah is involved in non-legal pro bono work with new immigrants and refugees to Canada. She has previously done pro bono legal work with Montréal’s Aboriginal community and the national office of Innocence Canada (formerly the Association in Defence of the Wrongly Convicted).
Sarah holds a Master of Arts in political science and has studied and worked in Montréal, Paris, and Washington, D.C.
