Description
Laurie Livingstone (She/Her/Hers) is a partner in the Litigation and Dispute Resolution group and practices in both Alberta and Ontario. Her practice focuses on administrative law, appellate advocacy, and complex commercial litigation, including professional negligence, and directors and officers liability matters.

Laurie has extensive experience representing clients in regulated industries, including the insurance industry, in regulatory and commercial disputes. Laurie also has nearly two decades of experience advising on election law and internal governance and discipline in self-governing organizations such as political parties, religious organizations, universities, and sports associations. She has appeared before all levels of court across Canada, before administrative tribunals, in private arbitrations (international and domestic), and before a royal commission of inquiry.

Laurie works closely with clients to understand their specific needs and desired outcomes. By taking a practical approach rooted in strategy and analysis, Laurie finds client-centric solutions that successfully marry business objectives with legal realities.

In addition to her courtroom work, Laurie is regularly called on to provide strategic advice on litigation and potential litigation, legal crisis management, and devil’s advocate services to pressure test litigation strategy. Her pro bono work has resulted in successful challenges to legislation in Alberta and elsewhere.

Laurie is committed to leadership in the profession and to pro bono work. She mentors recent law school graduates and as a Weldon Mentor (Dalhousie University), acts as a principal for Dentons articling students, is an instructor in trial advocacy at the University of Calgary, and is a long-time advocacy skills instructor with The Advocates Society.

Laurie has served as a member of the Alberta Electoral Boundaries Commission and is past Chair of the Board of Directors of Calgary Legal Guidance, a not-for-profit legal clinic located in downtown Calgary.
