Description
Sana is an associate lawyer in Siskinds’ Toronto office. Her practice is focused on plaintiff-side class actions.
Sana has always been a strong advocate for human rights and ensuring a voice for those who are marginalized or underrepresented. It is this passion that has fueled her interest in plaintiff-side class action work.
Prior to joining Siskinds, Sana worked at a boutique litigation firm in Toronto, where she acted as class counsel on the successful settlement of the LGBT Purge class action against the Federal Government of Canada. The LGBT Purge settlement represents, on a global basis, the largest-ever LGBTQ settlement. Sana also acted as class counsel in the case of uniformed female officers of the Waterloo Regional Police Service alleging systemic gender-based discrimination, sexual harassment, and assault.
At Siskinds, Sana acted as co-counsel in Araya v. Nevsun Resourced Ltd., a mass tort claim against a Canadian mining company over allegations of slave labor, torture, and crimes against humanity, at its Bisha mine in Eritrea. The case worked its way up to the Supreme Court of Canada where, in a significant leap for corporate social responsibility, the SCC held Canadian companies may be sued for breaches of Customary International Law abroad. The decision serves as a caution for Canadian corporations operating abroad.
Sana completed her JD at the University of Ottawa, and her Honours Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Political Science at the University of Toronto. Prior to her call to the bar, Sana interned at the World Bank’s International Center for Settlement of Investment Disputes in Washington, D.C.
