Description
Najma has been a lawyer with Brazeau Seller Law since 1999, and practises in the area of civil litigation.
In addition to her litigation practice with Brazeau Seller Law, Najma also has a personal injury and insurance litigation practice with Brazeau Seller Law’s sister law firm, Yegendorf Rashid LLP.
Najma’s practice includes a diverse range of complex litigation and personal injury matters. Her main passion is battling insurance companies on behalf of her clients on issues concerning insurance coverage disputes, catastrophic impairment, bad faith and, where clients are injured, damages. She is well versed in Ontario’s Insurance Act and its regulations, including the Statutory Accident Benefits Schedule. In addition to cases before the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, she has represented clients in dispute resolution proceedings before the Licence Appeal Tribunal and the Financial Services Commission of Ontario. Najma has developed an expertise in disability and bad faith claims against insurance companies, and participates in the Long-Term Disability Section of the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association.
In her pursuit of being an effective advocate for her clients, Najma frequently attends workshops and seminars on trial advocacy, evidence, insurance, and other litigation-related subjects. She is a member of the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association (OTLA) and is currently Vice-Chair of the Long-Term Disability section of OTLA. She is also a member of The Advocates’ Society, as well as a supporter of organizations such as REACH Canada, the Ontario Brain Injury Association, and the Canadian Paraplegic Association. Najma is also on the Board of Directors of OTLA and, for several years, she sat on the editorial board of The Litigator, a quarterly publication by OTLA. From 2015–16, during the global refugee crisis, Najma provided pro bono legal services to the University of Ottawa’s Refugee Sponsorship Support Program. She is a proponent of continuing legal education and has spoken at the County of Carleton Law Association Conference and the OTLA conference, has given webinars, and has organized and co-chaired two Long-Term Disability Insurance conferences in Toronto. She has also taught within the law clerks’ program at Algonquin College.
Najma is an avid writer on insurance-related topics. Her articles have appeared in The Litigator, The Lawyer’s Weekly, the Law Times, Advocate Daily, and the Ottawa Business Journal.
Najma studied at Carleton University, where she received her Bachelor of Arts (honours) in 1993. She earned her law degree at the University of Ottawa in 1996, and an LL.M from Queen’s University in 1997.
