Emily Xiang is an Articling Student at Ridout & Maybee LLP in the firm’s Toronto office. Her practice is directed towards the preparation and prosecution of patent, trademark , and industrial design applications in Canada and in the US. Emily brings experience in the areas of biotechnology, life sciences, chemistry, consumer goods, medical devices, and pharmaceuticals.

Emily obtained her Juris Doctor (J.D.) from Osgoode Hall Law School, where she served as President of the Intellectual Property Society of Osgoode. During her time there, she also took part in the Osgoode Mediation Clinic, providing mediation and conflict resolution services to the community within and surrounding the university. Under the guidance and mentorship of supervising lawyers, Emily provided one-to-one legal information and early-stage commercialization services to inventors, entrepreneurs, and start-up companies through the IP Innovation Clinic, and also authored numerous articles for Osgoode’s IP and technology blog, the IPilogue.

Emily graduated with an Honours Bachelor of Science (B. Sc.) with distinction from McMaster University, where she majored in Integrated Sciences and minored in French. During her time at McMaster, she worked as a Science Literacy teaching assistant, as well as a research assistant in McMaster’s Auditory Development Lab. Throughout her undergraduate education, Emily worked on several scientific research projects, including those in the fields of renewable energy, drug discovery, cancer research, neuroscience, climate change, and earth science.

Outside of work, Emily enjoys reading, discovering new places to eat, and cheering on her Toronto Raptors.
