Description
Nina Butz has a general commercial litigation practice with an emphasis on class actions. She has experience working in fraud and privacy litigation, product liability and consumer protection, as well as environmental and employment law. Nina’s work is often national or international in scope and she frequently works with clients facing cross-border litigation. She has worked on several matters before the Ontario Competition Bureau and Ontario Securities Commission. Nina regularly appears before the Ontario Superior Court of Justice and has appeared in the Ontario Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada.

Nina has worked on several particularly influential cases, including defending a class action involving one of the largest data breaches ever reported and successfully appealing a class action certification order at the Supreme Court of Canada that sought to recognize waiver of tort as a cause of action.

Nina volunteers her time with Pro Bono Ontario’s Legal Advice Hotline and has participated in full-representation of pro-bono clients.

Prior to joining Bennett Jones as an associate, Nina both summered and articled with the firm. Nina is a member of the Toronto Lawyers Association, the Advocates’ Society, the Young Advocates’ Standing Committee, the Ontario Bar Association (Class Action Law Section), the Canadian Bar Association and the American Bar Association. She is also a registered notary public.
