Description
Stephen Ronan is a partner in Lerners’ Toronto office and member of its Specialty Risk and Insurance, Defence Class Actions, Appeals, Health Law, and Professional Regulation groups. Stephen has a broad practice focussed on complex claims and litigation. He takes pride in providing creative solutions to clients on how to address matters efficiently and effectively. Stephen is a strong advocate for his clients and has appeared in all levels of court and before numerous administrative tribunals. He has argued numerous trials and appeals.

In Stephen’s specialty risk and insurance practice, he represents insurers and insureds in matters involving personal injury and property damage. He also provides comprehensive coverage advice to insurers on issues arising from various policy types, including title insurance, CGL, and “all-risks” builder’s risk coverage. He has represented insurers in actions and applications for declarations of coverage.

Stephen has particular expertise in aviation matters, with experience litigating claims involving injuries and fatalities. He has defended numerous class actions involving aviation events, in several jurisdictions across Canada. He has advised clients regarding actions commenced in the United States. Stephen also provides coverage opinions and advances subrogated claims on behalf of insurers in claims regarding property damage to aircraft.

Stephen also has considerable experience representing municipalities and public entities in claims related to road maintenance and design, occupiers’ liability, building inspection, fire response and loss and Charter breaches.

In his health law and professional regulation practice, Stephen defends regulated health professionals in negligence claims and in matters before their professional regulators. Stephen has appeared before various discipline tribunals and the Health Professions Appeal and Review Board. Stephen also acts as independent legal counsel to the discipline and fitness to practice committees of various health regulators in Ontario. He has experience advising on complex matters involving allegations of sexual abuse and fraud.
