Shawn Neylan is a partner who advises businesses in relation to Canadian federal regulatory and criminal laws in the economic sanctions, anti-corruption, commercial bribery, anti-money laundering, anti-terrorist financing, national security, competition and forced labour areas. Shawn’s wide range of experience spans over 35 years counselling clients on compliance and transactional matters, conducting internal investigations and litigating competition and a wide range of other matters including a merger challenge, a civil conspiracy case and a maritime blockade.
Shawn is highly esteemed for his expertise in substantive competition and antitrust matters, Shawn has received numerous accolades for his work and was named a leading lawyer by The Best Lawyers in Canada and The Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory.
Shawn is known for his creative, practical and no-nonsense approach. Shawn has extensive experience triaging and assessing potential compliance violations and negotiating regulatory risk allocation in transaction documentation for fast moving M&A and financing mandates.
Professional Activities
Shawn was a Co-Chair of the Competition Law Committee of the Inter Pacific Bar Association from 2015 to 2017 and was a Vice-Chair of that committee from 2010 to 2014. He was previously the Chair and Vice-Chair of the Reviewable Matters and Private Action Committee of the National Competition Law Section of the Canadian Bar Association (CBA) from 1996 to 2000 and has chaired and participated in a variety of CBA task forces. Shawn is a member of the steering groups of the Export Controls and Economic Sanctions, International Anti-Corruption, International Anti-Money Laundering, and National Security Committees of the Section of International Law of the American Bar Association.
Shawn has written and spoken widely on a number of economic sanctions, national security, competition law and investment review issues.
In his university years, Shawn served a summer in the 15th Field Artillery Regiment and spent another summer in the Cariboo as a placer gold free miner.
