Description
J. Mark Jackson, KC is focused on health law litigation, hospital-physician relationships, post-graduate medical education matters, and generally advising health care organizations on policy, governance, and contract issues. He is a member of the bar and engaged in a broad range of health care-related issues on behalf of public and private sector clients in Alberta, British Columbia, and the Northwest Territories. Mark has a practice that is divided between representing health care organizations facing complex medical malpractice claims and supporting medical leadership in their designated roles under medical staff Bylaws and Rules.

Mark works with health care clients, including health authorities, medical leadership, active treatment hospitals, long-term care facilities, PGME programs, clinics, and other health care providers. He regularly represents clients in medical malpractice litigation, hearings, inquests, appeals and fatality inquiries and provides advice on quality assurance and clinical issues, policies, standards of care and risk management. Known for his technical depth and skilled questioning, Mark has assisted clients before the Alberta Court of King’s Bench, the Alberta Court of Appeal, the Ontario Superior Court, the Supreme Court of the Northwest Territories, the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia, and the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal. He also handles matters in alternative dispute resolution proceedings, arbitrations, administrative hearings, and mediation. Mark is involved in drafting and updating medical staff bylaws and rules, advising on hospital-physician relationships, and representing medical leadership in administrative hearings and before statutory appeal bodies.

For over 24 years Mark has worked closely with health care organizations, medical leadership, and health care staff, including representing their interests in hearings, at trial and on appeal. Mark is also a frequent lecturer on risk management issues, documentation, and best practices using practical examples that arise in actual litigation.

Mark carefully monitors health care reform, medical malpractice law and health care legislation on a provincial and federal level, offering advice and guidance to clients impacted by developments. He also provides clinical policy and practice opinions to health care clients to assist with operational issues.
